Epping Forest District Council is aware of two incidents in Loughton of someone posing as a licensing officer, claiming that the premises’ licence annual fees have expired and demanding bank details for immediate payment.
The council has warned all businesses to remain vigilant against such scams, which are reportedly happening nationwide.
Councillor Paul Keska, who is responsible for regulatory services, said: “Fraudsters are becoming increasingly clever in their attempts to take advantage of people.
“Many of these scams are very convincing and look legitimate at first glance.
“Anyone can fall victim.
“If something doesn’t feel right, don’t engage.
“Trust your instinct.”
He urged affected individuals to report to the relevant authorities.
The council urged business owners to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a licensing officer before providing any information or making any payments.
Suspicious calls or visits should be reported directly to the council’s licensing team at Licensing@eppingforestdc.gov.uk or by calling 01992 564000.
Suspicious activity can also be reported to Action Fraud at 0300 123 2040.
