The team behind London’s Prince Charles Cinema has submitted a bid to reopen the former Stratford Picturehouse, almost a year after its closure.
Ben Freedman, managing director of the Prince Charles Cinema, said: “We feel that the Prince Charles Cinema brings a truly unique offer to cinema-goers and is a proven driver of the local economy, as people travel from all over the country to watch films here.
“We’re really excited about the opportunity to replicate this success in the vibrancy of Stratford.”
The Prince Charles, which was designated an asset of community value by Westminster Council in May, considers the Stratford site as a potential second location.
Mr Freedman said: “While we’re continuing the negotiations with our landlord regarding our lease, we are confident that we will be able to secure a lease renewal on fair terms that are reflective of the market.
“Meanwhile, the incredible support we’ve received in the past few months from our loyal audience has led us to explore once again the option of expansion.”
Stratford Picturehouse originally opened in 1997 as part of the area’s regeneration efforts.
It closed in 2024 and has remained unused since then.
If the bid is successful, the Prince Charles team plan to launch The Prince Charles Cinema East, potentially doubling its programme of more than 850 films and events each year.
