Plashet School’s maths department has been named the winner of the Bernice McCabe Award.
It was recognised by education charity The PTI for its vision and leadership in making maths meaningful, engaging, and accessible to all students, regardless of background or ability.
The award honours excellence in subject leadership in schools, recognising departments that place high-quality teaching at the centre of the classroom experience.
Sadia Ali, a maths teacher at Plashet, said: “Winning this award has really motivated us to carry on doing the work that we do.”
Presented annually in memory of Bernice McCabe OBE, the PTI’s founding co-director, the award celebrates departments that embody her belief in the transformative power of inspiring subject teaching.
The maths team at Plashet School was selected for its progress in reshaping maths education.
The department is said to have cultivated a culture of mastery teaching, high expectations, and student-led reasoning and discussion.
Hugh Rayment-Pickard, co-director of The PTI, said: “This award recognises teachers and departments across the country who continually go the extra mile for their students.
“The award allows The PTI to highlight excellence in subject leadership, and the impact that quality subject teaching can have in the classroom.
“Many congratulations to this year’s shortlisted departments, and to the tremendous subject teachers impacting young people’s lives around the country.”
The award includes a £5,000 prize and a trophy curated by award winning designer Sophie Conran.
The PTI has been able to support all nominated and winning schools through funding raised by players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.
Since 2018, more than £1.2 million has been raised, helping schools deliver high-quality lessons and improve educational outcomes for students across England.
The prize will support further professional development at Plashet School and help share its approach with other schools.
