A person was hit by the 7.55am Caterham to London Bridge Southern service train on January 23.
They were pronounced dead at the scene.
Enquiries into the circumstances leading up to their death are ongoing.
A Network Rail spokesperson said: “Following emergency services dealing with an incident between Whyteleafe and Kenley near Croydon earlier this morning, the line between Purley and Caterham / Tattenham Corner is closed until further notice.
“It is with great sadness that we can confirm a person died after being hit by a train and our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends at this difficult time.”
The line has since reopened and services are returning to normal at the time of writing.
The British Transport Police and paramedics attended following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
A BTP spokesperson said: “Sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries into the circumstances leading up to their death are ongoing.”
A Govia Thameslink Railway spokesperson said: “We can confirm that, shortly after 8am this morning, a person was hit by the 0755 Caterham to London Bridge Southern service between Whyteleafe and Kenley stations, near Purley in Surrey.”
