Many ambulances and British Transport Police cars were seen outside Watford Junction station after an alert was issued of an emergency on the railway from 2.13pm on January 1.
The service, which runs trains from London Euston, Wembley Central, Harrow & Wealdstone and Bushey, had trains delayed after a casualty on the tracks.
The person was pronounced dead at the scene and the incident is not being treated as suspicious.
A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “Officers were called to Watford Junction railway station at around 2pm yesterday (1 January) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
Services into London were disrupted until around 8.24pm.
A London Northwestern Railway spokesperson said: “Services running through Watford Junction were subject to delays and cancellation on Wednesday afternoon while the emergency services dealt with an incident on the railway.
“Our thoughts are with everybody affected.
“We encourage any passenger who has been delayed by 15 minutes or more as a result of disruption to claim compensation against the cost of their ticket under the Delay Repay scheme.”
