Palms Hotel, in Southend Arterial Road, was told to stop building an extension by Havering Council in a document published on February 20.
Details in the notice state that the conditional approval granted to the hotel in May last year for a side and front extension has not been adhered to.
The works form part of a refurbishment of the hotel built in 1971, that is reported to have cost millions of pounds.
According to the council, the hotel failed “to provide details and discharge the requirements” of a landscaping requirement in their agreement conditions.
The landscaping clause featured in their response, stating that “no above ground works shall take place” linked to the development until the council has seen and approved a landscaping and planting scheme.
Havering Council described the information about landscaping accompanying the approved plans as “insufficient” to allow them to “judge the appropriateness” of it.
As a result, the hotel has been ordered to stop all building works on the site in connection to the planning proposal until the requirements of the conditions have been fulfilled.
Suresh Konduru, one of the hotel’s directors, told the Recorder: “We understand the importance of adhering to these requirements and wish to address the matter promptly.
“Significant landscaping efforts have already been undertaken at both the front and rear sections of the property.”
Such planting and landscaping includes palm trees that have been planted to the front of the hotel and other species that add “ambience” to the venue, Mr Konduru said.
The hotel claims that it wanted to show evidence of its efforts in the landscaping plans to the council, which it says were in the process of being written up.
Further planting has been placed on hold in the hopes of good weather.
Developments at the site linked to the approved plans are ongoing, and were expected to take another eight to 12 weeks prior to this pause.
The hotel added: “We have instructed all our contractors to halt any further building works at the new extensions.
