Southwark Council has approved funding to explore design options to make the Southeastern station “fully-accessible”.
The £50,000 grant to Network Rail has been allocated from community infrastructure levy (CIL), which is a charge levied on new developments in the area.
At the council’s cabinet meeting on January 7, councillor Helen Dennis said that Nunhead was currently one of the borough’s least accessible areas by public transport.
The cabinet member for new homes and sustainable development added: “There’s no Tube there, fewer buses.
“The station is highly-used but is not accessible at the moment.
“So, we’re kickstarting some initial feasibility work looking at different designs that would make that station fully-accessible.”
She explained that it was hoped once this design work was completed, the station would be “a really strong candidate” for government funding through the Access for All scheme.
Council leader Kieron Williams: “The Nunhead station work is us really playing our part in making sure we can improve accessibility at a key station that is poorly-served by public transport.
“Having full accessibility is really key for the local community.”
Network Rail has been approached for more information about the project.
