Improvements to pedestrian safety at North Street roundabout are set to begin towards the end of next year, deputy mayor Cllr Barry Mugglestone confirmed at a council meeting on Wednesday (July 23).
The works will include the in-filling of subways and the creation of surface level crossings at the roundabout which links North Street to the ring road.
Oldchurch Road roundabout will also get “improvements to pedestrian accessibility” as part of the Bridge Close regeneration project, Cllr Mugglestone said.

There are no proposals for changes to the London Road roundabout, and the Main Road junction – the only other roundabout on the ring road with subways – was not mentioned at the meeting.
The details were revealed in response to a question by Cllr David Taylor, who wanted to know if there was an agreed start date for the Liveable Streets scheme.
In his response, Cllr Mugglestone clarified that the original Liveable Neighbourhoods project cannot be started after Transport for London (TfL) withdrew the funding in 2023 due to its “financial position”.
However, Havering Council has been able secure grant funding for the North Street works and is continuing to seek funding for the rest of the improvements laid out in the original scheme, he said.

Cllr Mugglestone said: “The current programme for North Street roundabout shows construction work starting towards the end of 2026.
“This date, however, in dependent on TfL and other factors over which the council has no direct control.”
He added that, in the meantime, the council will be making improvements to CCTV at town centres across the borough to prevent crime and antisocial behaviour.
