North London NHS Foundation Trust is planning to acquire Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust, both trusts confirmed in a joint statement.
The former runs specialist mental health services across Barnet, Camden, Enfield, Haringey and Islington.
The latter used to oversee The Tavistock Centre in Swiss Cottage – the UK’s only dedicated gender identity clinic for children and young people – before its closure last year.

It describes itself as having “a focus on training and education as well as providing a full range of mental health services and therapies for children and their families, young people and adults”.
A spokesperson for the two trusts said: “The transaction will significantly enhance and strengthen children and adult mental health services in north London.
“We hope this transaction will also end uncertainty and increase opportunities for valued service users, staff and students at the Tavistock and Portman and establish North London Foundation Trust as a leader in mental health research and education.”
They added that the merger is expected to be complete by April 1, 2026.
