They can turn up with family, friends or neighbours who can join in.

The People’s Games are being held in Dagenham on September 13 by the North East London Cancer Alliance for all ages and abilities with a chance to try out different activities.

It will be at the Barking Sporthouse gym in Mayesbrook Park, from 11am to 3pm.

The alliance helps to improve cancer services for patients in Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Redbridge, Newham, Waltham Forest, Tower Hamlets and Hackney.

The Shoreditch event took place on June 28 in Haggerston Park, off Queensbridge Road.

The aim is to break down barriers that prevent people getting into physical activity such as feeling nervous, unfit or unsure how to start.

“Something new can be daunting if you’ve been out of the loop with exercise or not sure what’s available,” the alliance’s Sarita Yaganti said.

“Our community games are about removing those barriers — no judgment, just a chance to try things out and take steps to a healthier life.”

There is also health advice with blood pressure checks and how to quit smoking.

Activities can include a short walk, a gentle stretch, a health ‘MoT’ or a chat over tea.

There are also sports to try such as boxing, netball and football.

The first event was held at Mile End Leisure Centre last month.
