Constantin Silvio Ditescu, 55, of Richard House Drive, sustained the injuries in a fall outside Kingsway Pharmacy on the A124 Barking Road, East Ham.
He “had been drinking with friends”, said senior east London coroner Graeme Irvine, and “stumbled backwards”.
The incident occurred on March 9 and resulted in a “serious brain injury”.
He was urgently transferred to the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel – but, “despite treatment, he succumbed to his injuries”, the coroner said.
He died on March 18.
An inquest into his death was formally opened at East London Coroner’s Court, Walthamstow, on Tuesday, March 8.
Inquests are held in the public interest to investigate unnatural deaths and whether future similar deaths might be avoidable.
Mr Irvine made a series of orders for disclosure of evidence, including Mr Ditescu’s GP records, hospital records and statements from the paramedics who attended the incident.
He also ordered toxicology tests be carried out on any blood samples taken from Mr Ditescu upon his admission to hospital, to see what substances had been in his system and at what levels.
The coroner declared Mr Ditescu’s family “interested persons” – a legal status entitling them to view evidence ahead of an inquest and question any witnesses called to give evidence.
The final inquest was listed for June 30.
