Graphic design student Marius Mihalachi, 17, created the logo for Newham Heritage Centre at Newham College in East Ham.
Marius, from Plaistow, came up with a design inspired by architectural shapes found in archive spaces.
The shapes feature the letter ‘H’ to symbolise ‘history’ and ‘heritage’ — ideal for the project, competition judges decided.
His logo has been unveiled by the Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz.
“This project shows how young people can shape the cultural identity of their community,” the mayor said.
“The logo reflects the diverse stories we want to preserve, in a place where ideas grow and voices are heard.”
Twelve sixth-form students took part, with a visit to the library to learn about its history and future as a cultural hub.
They worked with tutors at their college and architects to develop fresh designs, inspired by the library’s Victorian architecture.
The public suggested names for the new centre in Barking Road, with the plain and simple Newham Heritage Centre eventually chosen.
The centre is being used in displays, exhibitions and events when it opens next year, funded by the National Lottery for public access to archive and museum collections.
