Paul Martin has been appointed as Newham Council’s interim chief executive (Image: Newham Council) Mr Martin was chief executive of Richmond upon Thames and Wandsworth Councils between 2016 and 2021, where he led the shared staffing arrangement between the two boroughs.
Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz OBE said: “Paul is amongst the most experienced chief executives in local government and I am delighted that he will be joining us in Newham.
“His experience and wisdom will be a huge benefit to the council as we accelerate our improvement programme.”
He served as chief executive of Wandsworth Council from 2010 and held the same position at Peterborough City Council and Sutton Council.
He has also held other interim chief executive posts, including roles with the Government of Jersey, Ealing Council, and most recently Bristol City Council.
Mr Martin said: “I’m looking forward to joining Newham as its interim chief executive and getting started immediately.
“Newham Council has many strengths and some significant challenges.
“In the many places I have worked, I have learnt that collaboration is at the heart of an effective council.”
Ms Gbago left her position to spend more time with her daughter, Newham Council said.
She added: Abi said “Newham is a wonderful borough and one I have been proud to serve.
“But it is time to rest and reset after navigating the council through a busy nearly two years.”
