Earlier this year, Lidl announced it would be opening a new store in the old Wilko site on Sutton High Street.
The new Lidl store will bring 40 new jobs and is expected to open at the start of 2026.
A new Lidl store, which will bring 40 new jobs, will open in Sutton in early 2026.
Construction has now begun, with the area fenced off by Harvey Shopfitters Ltd.
The Wilko store has stood empty since it closed in October 2023 when the supermarket chain crashed into administration.
The 1,130m² store will provide residents with more shopping options and added convenience, featuring an in-store bakery and a diverse selection of products.
The project will also revive the previously empty former Wilko unit and is expected to create around 40 new jobs in the area.
This new store forms part of Lidl’s ongoing investment in the capital, following recent initiatives such as the £285m expansion of its Belvedere warehouse and a series of pay increases for London staff.
Max Clapton, Regional Head of Property at Lidl GB, said: “We’ve seen demand for our products continue to rise in Sutton and are excited to serve even more of the community here.
“Our second store will offer an improved shopping experience for residents, create more jobs and builds on our continued growth throughout the capital.
“We’re excited that the fit-out works are underway and be a step closer to opening.”
Councillor Jake Short, Chair of Sutton Council’s Housing, Economy & Business Committee, said: “It’s great to see Lidl joining other big names like Pret a Manger, Popeye’s and Pandora, who have all recently opened in our borough’s main high street.
“Sutton town centre is bucking the national trend, and we have very few empty shops and our footfall is increasing.
“This is good news for both local residents and businesses.
“It’s also really good news that Lidl have chosen to open a second store in our town centre and will bring the vacant former Wilko’s unit back into use.”
The store will also support Lidl’s Lidl Foodies programme, encouraging local primary schools to develop an interest in healthy eating.
