Titled ‘One Shot With Ed Sheeran’, the Suffolk-based singer will be captured performing some of his biggest hits in one single, continuous take, the signature style of the special’s director Philip Barantini.
Barantini was behind the hugely popular Netflix series Adolescence.
The musical special, set for release next month, will follow Ed in New York during one afternoon, performing in real-time while interacting with fans and passersby.

New Ed Sheeran musical special coming to Netflix next month
Netflix has described the show as “a mesmerising journey” that blends live performance with documentary-style spontaneity.
A tease for the project reads: “The multi-Grammy Award winner will take viewers on a mesmerising journey, during one afternoon, in real time, as he travels the streets of New York City, performing his greatest hits, captured in a single take.
“From impromptu performances on bustling sidewalks and subway cars, to intimate interactions with fans and passersby, Ed Sheeran’s journey through New York will be captured in a series of unforgettable moments, highlighting the pandemonium and excitement that follows.”
Its director will be Philip Barantini, best known for the hit drama series Adolescence, which debuted on Netflix in March and became the platform’s second most-watched show of all time.
The series, which starred Stephen Graham, also showcased a one-shot style in each episode and went on to win six Emmy Awards.
Now, the new Netflix series with Ed Sheeran will also follow the one-shot style, which has become a hallmark of Barantini’s directing style.
It will be used throughout ‘One Shot With Ed Sheeran’ to give viewers an unbroken experience of the star’s journey and performances across New York.
Speaking previously to Radio Times about the one-shot filming technique used in Adolescence, Barantini said: “Personally, I find myself watching things, and it could be brilliant but I’ve got one eye on my phone, so you have to really grab me.”
He added: “I think what the one-shot does is makes you sit up and you can’t take your eyes off it, because if you do blink for a second you miss something.
“It draws the audience in. It’s like going to a play. If you go to a play, you can’t be on your phone, yeah? And so you’ve got to pay attention to everything.”
