New Bridge Street, in Blackfriars, is not expected to fully reopen until at least this evening (December 11) or tomorrow morning following a gas leak earlier this week.
Around 25 firefighters, City of London police officers and Cadent Gas teams were called to the road at around 11.30am on Tuesday (December 9) after reports of a gas smell.
A 100m cordon was put in place around the site and around 400 people were evacuated from nearby buildings, including Starbucks, Tesco Express and the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
The London Fire Brigade warned the public to “avoid the area” while crews worked with partners to isolate a 24-inch gas main and stop the gas escape.
However, during investigations a water leak was also discovered, which is now being dealt with by Thames Water, according to Cadent.

A Cadent spokesperson said: “Our gas emergency engineers were able to find and stop a gas escape on New Bridge Street last night without disrupting any gas supplies in the area.
“During our investigations we found a water leak and until that has been repaired by Thames Water, we will not be able to complete our final checks.
“As a result, the southbound lane closure will remain in place until the water leak has been repaired.”
Cadent said it has been informed by Thames Water that the water pipe will not be fixed until Thursday night or Friday morning.
The southbound lane of New Bridge Street will remain closed between its junction with Ludgate Circus and Queen Victoria Street until all works are finished.
All properties on the street have now been reoccupied, but road users are still advised to avoid the area.
