Ryan Swan pleaded not guilty to making or possessing an explosive substance in Morden during a hearing at Kingston Crown Court.
It is alleged that the 42-year-old from Green Lane made or knowingly possessed a quantity of black powder without a lawful object on or before August 19, 2025.
Swan also denied having a dagger at Sainsbury’s Local on Central Road in Morden when he was arrested on that date.
The charge alleges he had the pointed or bladed article in a public place without good reason or lawful authority.
Swan wore a grey, prison-issue tracksuit and appeared by video-link from HMP Thameside.
He will next appear at the same court on February 12 and will stand trial on September 14.
Judge Peter Lodder KC told him: “Although you are in custody, if you do not attend either of those hearings, they will almost certainly proceed without you.
“And, so far as the trial is concerned, if you do not attend, you may not be represented.
“Do you understand?”
Swan said: “Yes, my lord, thank you, my lord.”
