Mode, a co-working space by day and bar by night, opened at 157 Kirkdale this summer.

The venue was opened by Dan Whiteside, a drinks industry veteran who wanted to offer something different to Lewisham.
The 46-year-old told the News Shopper: “I’ve worked in the drinks industry for most of my life, mainly in London, for large restaurant and premium bar setups.
“During Covid, I published a wholesale drinks book, and since then I’ve been freelancing and consulting for casual dining groups on their drinks menus.”
Dan had long been thinking about opening a bar but also wanted a space that offered something different during the day.
Dan added: “There are hundreds of cafes and fairly average pubs around here.
“I thought, why not try to open something a bit different?”
During the day, Mode operates as a co-working space, offering daily passes and monthly memberships.
People have access to high-speed Wi-Fi, air conditioning, storage drawers, and complimentary refreshments, including coffee from Mont58.
He said: “They’re basically comfortable, plugged in, air-conditioned, and have refreshments included.”
The space can fit up to 22 people, and in its first few weeks has averaged around eight patrons per day.

Dan added: “It’s been really good so far, probably better than I thought.
“People really like it, and we’ve got some lovely members.”
In the evenings, Mode transforms into a bar, serving both classic and creative cocktails.
Dan says he drinks are of high quality, and that there’s a wide range of offers.
He explained: “We have Mezcal margaritas, a Pisco sour, a twist on a Paloma, infused Negronis, and infused Old Fashioneds.
“It’s all about attention to detail and consistency, from the glassware to the garnishes.
“People don’t need to wait more than a few minutes for their drinks.
“It’s been a really good atmosphere in the evenings.”

The venue also features retro arcade machines, a table football, and a mix of lounge seating decorated with local artwork, including pieces by Catarina Diaz.

Dan said it is “family-friendly on weekends, and just somewhere comfortable for people to spend time, whether working or socialising”.
Mode officially opened on July 25, following a three-and-a-half-month refurbishment of the previously-used café space.
Dan added: “It’s just really about offering something affordable and welcoming, with really good drinks and a comfortable environment.”
