Mawney Road is shut between its junction with Olive Street and its junction with the ring road (St Edwards Way) until March 7.
The closure, which came into force yesterday (February 24), is to allow for the construction of a zebra crossing and associated safety improvements, such as textured paving and Belisha beacons.
Works will only take place between 8am and 5pm each day – but residents fear it is already causing “chaos”.

One resident said on Facebook: “Mawney Road is chaos.
“It’s taken us half an hour from our house in Linden Street to Eastern Avenue.”
Another added: “All the side roads are jammed up top as people turn back using them as detours.
“For people living in and off Mawney Road it is absolutely awful.”
During the closure, the diversion route is via St Edwards Way, North Street, Eastern Avenue West, Whalebone Lane North, and London Road.
Bus routes 252 and 651 will also be diverted until March 7, via St Edwards Way, North Street Roundabout and Eastern Avenue.
Towards Collier Row, stops from Olive Street to Oak Street will not be served and towards Hornchurch and Romford, stops from Oak Street to North Street will not be served.
The Mawney Road zebra crossing is part of a new safety improvement scheme, which Havering Council consulted the public about in October 2024.
A study by the council found that 1,100 vehicles per hour use Mawney Road, and that drivers “regularly” reached speeds of up to 50 mph.
The council did not provide a timescale for when its study took place or for how long.
