Steven Ellis, 48, of Dunton Road in Romford, carried out the assault on Sunday, April 27.
He appeared at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court the following day where he pleaded guilty to assault and breaching a criminal behaviour order (CBO).
The three-year CBO was given to Ellis last June in relation to his shoplifting in the town centre.
The order banned him entering the town centre within the Romford ring road, including the Mercury Mall shopping centre, and included conditions that he must not commit anti-social behaviour, harassment, or cause alarm and distress, nuisance or annoyance to anyone within Havering.
The assault outside Tesco counted as breaching this order by causing anti-social behaviour.
Ellis was sentenced to four months in prison.
