Network Rail teams in Anglia delivered the improvements at London Liverpool Street, Bethnal Green and across the London Overground lines during the Christmas period.
The work took advantage of lower passenger numbers and quieter lines.
Katie Frost, route director for Anglia at Network Rail, said: “We’ve delivered major renewals and repairs over the festive period and I want to take this opportunity to thank all our passengers, for their patience while we have completed these important engineering work across our network.
“There is never a good time to close the railway, but over Christmas the railway sees passenger numbers drop by 50% and this is the best opportunity to complete as much work as we can when the railway is quieter than usual.”
At London Liverpool Street, engineers spent eight days replacing 224 roof panels and 53 maintenance hatches as part of a roof renewal project.
Improvements to the station’s rainwater drainage system were also completed to help it withstand more frequent and intense storms.
At Bethnal Green, teams refurbished old sleepers and seven sets of points on the West Anglia main lines, improving reliability for Greater Anglia and London Overground Weaver line passengers.
On the London Overground Mildmay line, ten sets of points were replaced between Camden Road and Richmond/Shepherd’s Bush during 11 days of continuous work.
The line reopened as scheduled on Monday, January 5.
In Barking, a new pedestrian footbridge was opened at Kennedy Road, reconnecting the communities either side of the railway for the first time since 2022.
Other upgrades included changing old timbers and tamping a 2.1km section near Ipswich, and installing a new buffer stop at Clacton-on-Sea station for platform 4.
