Railway lines for London Kings Cross and London Liverpool Street were closed by emergency services at around 9am today (October 21).
Police were called to a casualty on the tracks at Meldreth railway station in Cambridgeshire.
Officers arrived with paramedics but a person died at the scene.
CrossCountry, Great Northern, Greater Anglia and Thameslink trains – some running to and from London – were cancelled or delayed by up to an hour.
Disruption lasted for seven hours, long after lines were reopened as services returned to normal.
A British Transport Police spokesperson confirmed: “Officers were called to Meldreth railway station at around 9am today (October 21) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
“Paramedics also attended.
“However, sadly, a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
An East of England Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “An ambulance, a rapid response vehicle and three Hazardous Area Response Team vehicles were sent to Meldreth Train Station this morning following reports that someone had been struck by a train.
“Sadly, a person had died at the scene.”
