Essex Police were called with reports of the incident on the southbound carriageway of the M11 shortly before 1am this morning (November 16).
The scene was located between junctions six and five, with emergency services closing the road for several hours.
Seven vehicles were involved in the crash and a number of people have been taken to hospital.
Their conditions are unknown at this stage.
