A yellow weather warning is in place today (July 6) until 7pm for thunderstorms across large parts of London and Kent.

Today thunderstorms are expected in the south west of England spreading eastwards throughout the morning.

Met Office has warned that thunderstorms could also bring outbreaks of heavy rainfall of up to 25mm, with some areas experiencing up to 60mm of rainfall during repeated thunderstorms.

In London, rainfall is expected to arrive by lunchtime, turning heavy and thundery at around 1pm, before easing gradually by 4pm today with temperatures at a balmy 25 degrees.

The weather will remain cloudy throughout the evening, with the possibility of further heavy and thundery showers, becoming drier with further rain likely to arrive from a northern direction by the early hours.

Here’s the hour by hour forecast for today (July 6):

  • 11am – Cloudy
  • 12pm – Light shower
  • 1pm – Heavy shower
  • 2pm – Heavy shower

A mostly dry and bright start away from the east, where early cloud and rain should clear. Partly cloudy with heavy thundery showers developing later, these perhaps merging into longer spells of rain at times. Breezy.

Maximum temperature 25 °C.

Tonight:

Partly cloudy with further showers this evening, some of which may be heavy and thundery. Turning drier overnight before outbreaks of heavy rain arrive from the north toward dawn. Breezy.

Minimum temperature 11 °C.

What to expect

Today’s weather could potentially cause flooding in some areas, along with delays and disruption to roads, bus and train services.

People are being advised to check before travelling to avoid disruption to their journeys.
