The discount supermarket chain will launch stores in Stamford Hill, Walworth Road, and Sutton High Street over the next eight weeks, as part of a plan to open 19 locations nationwide.
Richard Taylor, chief real estate officer at Lidl UK, said: “We’re starting the new year as we mean to go on, with a major investment that reinforces our commitment to delivering the best experience for customers and creating a positive impact for the communities we serve.
“With this push, we’re set on winning more shoppers across the nation and claiming an even bigger share of the market.”
The chain described the openings as a significant step in its ongoing UK expansion.
The German-owned retailer is planning 19 new stores across the UK, with other sites including Basildon, Horley, Reading, and Tring.
The announcement comes after Lidl reached its 1,000th UK store in 2025 and aims to add another 40 locations by February 28 this year.
The company said the expansion will create up to 640 new jobs.
Lidl also revealed a £43 million investment to upgrade more than 70 existing stores across the UK.
Planned upgrades include new tills and larger freezers.
Energy-efficient chillers using natural refrigerants and smart lighting systems will also be part of the refurbishment.
The company says these systems will help reduce electricity consumption.
Lidl is currently the UK’s sixth-largest grocery chain.
It has made the greatest market share gains in the sector in recent months, according to experts at Worldpanel.
Some experts believe Lidl could surpass Morrisons, who are currently fifth, if current growth continues.
The chain reported a strong Christmas trading period, with sales rising 10 per cent to more than £1.1 billion in the four weeks to Christmas Eve.
Beyond London, other new Lidl stores will open in Basildon, Birmingham, Brough, Burntwood, Calne, Chester, Dereham, Havant, Hereford, Horley, Hucknall, Reading, Royal Wootton Bassett, Salisbury, Sandford, and Tring.
