Network Rail has said that customers should check for closures along the Mildmay line in the coming weeks, as work will impact some services until the end of March.
Railway workers will be replacing more than half-a-kilometre of “worn-out” track near Stratford, as well as wheel timbers that carry the line over Chalk Farm Road.
The work is needed due to the high degree of “wear and tear” on the section of track being replaced because it is intensively used by heavy freight trains.
A Network Rail spokesperson said: “The track replacement work will reduce the chance of faults in future that could have a major knock-on effect on passenger services.”
The new wheel timbers being installed near Camden Road station are expected to last for up to 50 years.
Other works that will be carried out during the closures include replacing points, which allow trains to change tracks, near Stratford, and levelling the track along the line.
Between Camden Road and Stratford, engineers will also fix track and overhead wire defects.
Rory O’Neill, TfL’s general manager for London Overground, said: “This maintenance work is vital to ensure we can continue to operate the most reliable possible service for customers.
“I would like to apologise to our customers for the disruption and ask them to check before they travel and allow a little extra time to complete their journeys.”
Rail replacement buses will be running during the closures on the line, which runs between Stratford and Richmond or Clapham Junction.
The full list of services that will be disrupted is as follows:
- Sunday January 19 – no service between Gospel Oak and Stratford, or between Willesden Junction and Clapham Junction
- Saturday January 25 and Sunday January 26 – no service between Gospel Oak and Stratford
- Saturday February 1 and Sunday February 2 – no service between Gospel Oak and Stratford
- Saturday February 8 – no service between Camden Road and Stratford
- Sunday February 9 – no service between Gospel Oak and Stratford
- Sunday February 16 – no service between Camden Road and Stratford
- Sunday March 30 – no service between Camden Road and Stratford
