The Mayor of London was recognised for his “exceptional contributions to leadership, social justice, and fostering business innovation”.
UEL awarded him the honorary doctorate in business at a ceremony on Thursday, 16 January at its Docklands campus.
Sir Sadiq said: “I would like to thank the university for this honour – and for its vital work to inspire and guide students, who in turn shape the future of our city and society, as we continue building a better and more prosperous London for everyone.”
The university said the award was in recognition of Sir Sadiq’s work as mayor, including the Good Work Standard, which encourages businesses to adopt fair employment practices, and the London Growth Hub, which provides support for small and medium enterprises.
The university also highlighted the London is Open campaign, launched in the wake of the 2016 Brexit referendum, which sent a message that London remains open to people, ideas, trade, and business.
Vice chancellor and president of UEL, Professor Amanda Broderick, said: “We are proud to honour his outstanding contributions to public service and the community.”
