Brentwood residents are set for a new Lidl shop at Wates Way Industrial Estate in Ongar Road – with the chain confirming that construction work could start on the site as early as summer 2025.
A Lidl spokesperson told the Recorder that timelines are “yet to be determined” but the supermarket is “hoping to start [works] on site this summer”.
Brentwood Council previously received notification from Lidl that it would start development of the store before the end of the year.
It has been more than two years since the German chain was granted planning permission to build a new supermarket in Brentwood town centre, after a successful appeal.
The proposals also include 46 residential flats and a three-stage signalised junction outside the store for highway safety reasons.

The council initially rejected its proposals on the grounds that it would have an “unacceptable” impact on traffic – and was eventually ordered to pay costs when Lidl successfully appealed.
Brentwood only has a large Sainsbury’s in the town centre, alongside smaller stores like Iceland and Tesco Express.
The council’s scrutiny, performance and standards committee conducted a review of supermarket provision in the borough last year, which involved it writing to seven major supermarket chains and running a survey with the Brentwood Connected Business Improvement District.
However, a committee report from January 23 reveals that only Asda responded to its letter.
From this, the committee recommended that a new analysis of the retail sector for the borough is completed.
