Will Stevenson, 18, has been awarded the funding by the Oddfellows, one of the UK’s oldest friendly societies, after being selected for its First Degree Course Educational Award.
The non-repayable bursary is awarded to selected students from among the society’s national membership and is intended to help cover the costs of student life.
Will, a member of Woolwich Oddfellows and former student at Harris Westminster Sixth Form, will receive £900 for each year of his three-year course.
He began studying geography at Durham University’s Trevelyan College in autumn 2025.
He said: “The funding will benefit me significantly throughout my undergraduate course as it will contribute towards society subscriptions such as the Durham University Big Band, allowing me to pursue passions, build friendships and make lasting memories in these three years.
“Hearing that I was a recipient of the award was incredibly exciting, knowing university life would be a more comfortable experience, and I am extremely thankful to the Oddfellows for the trust and generosity they offered me.”
Although he is currently uncertain about his future career path, Will said the broad appeal of geography and its wide range of applications drew him to the course.
He has considered potential careers in consultancy or diplomacy.
Nicola Budds, branch secretary of Woolwich Oddfellows, said: “We’re delighted for Will, and glad that the Oddfellows is able to help him out in what is an exciting chapter in his life.
“Budgeting alongside studies can be tough, so this award should help to ease that burden a little.
“We’re already very proud of Will’s achievements and we wish him every success at university and beyond.”
Woolwich Oddfellows is a not-for-profit friendly society with more than 160 members in the area.
The group offers regular social events, welfare support, and opportunities to participate in volunteering and fundraising.
The Oddfellows’ First Degree Course Educational Award is designed to support first-time university students from within its membership.
