Lewisham College students have not used the site in Deptford Bridge since last summer, but Goldsmiths fine arts college currently occupies some of the buildings.
Developer RER London now owns the site, which straddles the border between Lewisham and Greenwich, and has submitted a planning application to redevelop it.
Plans include demolishing the existing buildings and replacing them with new blocks of flats, the tallest of which would be 31-storeys high.
In total, eight new buildings would be built, providing just over 900 homes.
Around two-thirds of these homes would fall on the Lewisham side of the border, with the remainder in Greenwich.
The developer says it has also set aside space in its designs that would allow Goldsmiths to continue using the site. The development would also provide new shops and restaurants.
Only around one in every ten homes built as part of the new development will be classified as “affordable” housing.
The developer has said that the site’s location next to Deptford Bridge DLR station means it can be “car-free”.
They also plan to open up 600 metres of waterfront overlooking Deptford Creek, promising “lively squares and plazas”.
The tallest 31-storey block will be in Lewisham, as well as a further three building ranging in height between 11-storeys and 17-storeys.
In Greenwich, the tallest building will be 24-storeys tall, with two further blocks standing ten-storeys high.
A single-storey building providing studio space will also be built close to Greenwich High Road.
