Bexley Council announced that the green space has once again been recognised as one of the UK’s best-managed parks.
The international honour celebrates the site’s excellent management, environmental standards, and strong community involvement.
The feedback from this year especially highlighted the area as “an invaluable green lung in a very urban area” with “excellent management and fantastic community involvement.”
Richard Diment, councillor responsible for neighbourhoods, said: “Lesnes Abbey Woods is a much-loved green space and this award is a testament to the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and community partners.
“It’s fantastic to see their hard work recognised nationally once again.”
The Green Flag Award, a quality mark for parks and green spaces, sets the benchmark for excellence across the UK and beyond.
The recognition helps promote the site and share best practices across the sector.
Paul Todd MBE, Green Flag Award scheme manager, said: “Congratulations to everyone involved in Lesnes Abbey Woods who have worked tirelessly to ensure that it achieves the high standards required for the Green Flag Award.
“Quality parks and green spaces like Lesnes Abbey Woods make the country a healthier place to live and work in and a stronger place in which to invest.
“Crucially, Lesnes Abbey Woods is a vital green space for communities in the borough of Bexley to enjoy nature, and during the ongoing cost of living crisis, it is a free and safe space for families to socialise.
“It also provides important opportunities for local people and visitors to reap the physical and mental health benefits of green space.”
Thanks were extended to the Friends of Lesnes Abbey and Woods, the hardworking volunteers, and the grounds maintenance and trees teams for their dedication and passion.
The Green Flag Award not only recognises the efforts of the teams but also helps promote the site and share best practices across the sector.
