Terence Mark Hogan, 51, of Lonsdale Avenue, died at his partner’s home in Hunters Hall Road, Dagenham, in November.
An inquest was formally opened into his death at East London Coroner’s Court, Walthamstow, on Wednesday, April 23.
Senior coroner Graeme Irvine ordered police to take a statement from Mr Hogan’s partner.
“It will need to be a detailed statement incorporating the events of last November, including the circumstances in which she was aware that Mr Hogan was taking noxious substances on her premises,” he said.
Mr Hogan was found dead around 18 hours after his partner had last seen him, Mr Irvine said.
“On the evening of the 16th of November 2024, at about nine o’clock, Terence was seen by his partner at her address,” he told the court.
Mr Irvine said Mr Hogan was known to have inhaled lighter fluid, smoked drugs and drunk somewhere in the region of eight or nine cans of beer.
“Terence was agitated in his behaviour so just after midnight, his partner left him to go to sleep.
“When she woke the next day, she checked on Mr Hogan at six o’clock in the evening and Mr Hogan was unresponsive.”
Police and paramedics were called to the address but Mr Hogan was pronounced dead.
Police declared the death non-suspicious and referred it to Mr Irvine, who ordered a post-mortem examination.
“Unfortunately, due to systemic delays in the provision of reports from forensic pathologists and the need for toxicology, it is only very recently that a cause of death has been offered to the court,” he said.
Mr Hogan’s death was attributed to “multi-drug toxicity”, making it an unnatural death that must be investigated via an inquest.
Mr Irvine ordered disclosure of evidence including GP records.
The full inquest was provisionally listed for November 5.
