Qamar Parvez Ashraf, 68, who lived on Eastern Avenue, was shot after he tried to stop an attempt to steal his phone at a drinking spot in Tema on November 7.
He died at Tema General Hospital the same day.
Senior Coroner Graeme Irvine opened an inquest into his death at East London Coroner’s Court in Walthamstow on Thursday, December 11.
Mr Irvine said the death was reported to the court by the undertaker who repatriated his body to London.
“The circumstances described were that Mr Ashraf had been fatally injured during a gunpoint robbery on November 7,” Mr Irvine said.
No post-mortem examination took place in Ghana and to the best of the court’s knowledge no criminal prosecution has commenced.
A post-mortem examination undertaken in the UK gave his cause of death as a gunshot wound to the heart.
A close friend of the victim told the Metro: “He was a great guy, I was close to him, and it’s shocking news. His family, including his son, are looking for answers. We are all devastated.”
A neighbour told the paper: “He seemed like a nice family man. This news is very distressing. Our hearts go out to his family.”
Authorities in Ghana said they are searched for the shooter – one of a group of six suspects who they said were at the scene and fled on motorbikes.
A 9mm spent bullet shell was recovered from the shooting site as part of the investigation, police in Tema said.
