Builders on Cameron Road detected the smell of gas at 1.17pm today (August 15).
Cadent engineers arrived within 15 minutes and, alongside emergency services, cordoned off the area.
As a safety measure, five shops and the flats above them were evacuated.
A Cadent spokesperson said: “Our engineers are completing the repair to a service pipe at this time (5.25pm) which should be completed shortly.”
Residents were expected to be allowed back into their homes by early evening after the repair and subsequent safety checks.
The spokesperson added: “No gas supplies have been impacted and no impact on the local Seven Kings Stain or train line either.
“We thank people for their patience whilst we deal with this gas escape.”
Despite the scare, the situation was managed swiftly with minimal disruption.
