Born in Hackney in 1972, the 53-year-old actor was recognised for his work supporting young people through the Elba Hope Foundation, our sister site London Now has reported.
Elba is best known for his leading roles in Luther and The Wire and has also starred in films such as Pacific Rim and The Jungle Book.
He is one of 1,157 people to be recognised in the New Year Honours, which celebrates outstanding contributions across the UK.
He said: “I hope we can do more to draw attention to the importance of sustained, practical support for young people and to the responsibility we all share to help them find an alternative to violence.”
Sir Idris’ first job was at the Ford factory in Dagenham, where his father Winston worked.
Also honoured were ice dancers Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, as well as England’s women’s football and rugby teams.
The honours list rewards individuals who have made a significant impact in public life or given exceptional service to the UK.
