Zhe Wang, 31, a Chinese national studying at Goldsmiths, was found injured at a flat on Manor Park on March 20 last year.
Police forced entry to the flat at 11.15pm following reports of a stabbing.
Wang died a short time later.
Joshua Michals, a 24-year-old US National who was living in Deals Gateway, is charged with her murder.
He appeared at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday (January 13) set to face trial, having pleaded not guilty to her murder.
Michals sat in the dock, wearing a blue suit and tie with short brown hair and a beard, as a jury of 12 were sworn in.
After the jury were sworn in Judge Nicholas Heathcote Williams KC told them the trial will begin in full on Wednesday.
He told them: “We will not be ready to consider the matters in front of your today, or tomorrow, so I’m going to ask you to return at 10am on Wednesday morning when you will hear the prosecution’s speech.”
The Department of Educational Studies at Goldsmiths described Zhe as a “wonderful student” who was “so full of life, and so erudite”.
In a statement released through the university, her family said: “Zhe was a kind and gentle girl who sought knowledge and advancement, and was extremely gifted in languages, proficient in five languages.
“Our family loves and misses Zhe dearly! Before her death, she was engaged in teaching IELTS, with outstanding results, and many students in China were shocked and saddened by her unexpected departure!
“She came to the University of London with a dream, where she had teachers who appreciated her and classmates who cared for her. I believe she had a wonderful time and she must have loved you all from the bottom of her heart!”
