High Street consists of a range of restaurants, supermarkets and big chains such as Subway and Holland & Barrett – but a number of premises still lie empty.
The Recorder counted six closed or vacant units along the main stretch of the road, some which used to house well-known names or pubs.

Al’s Pie & Mash – which shut on September 27 – was the first empty unit we noticed, although the sign in the window which announced its closure with “great sadness” has been removed.

It is not yet known if a new business is preparing to take over the premises.

At 78A High Street, the former Argos store is still boarded up following its closure more than four years ago.
The building was spotted on Rightmove earlier this year as a freehold or to let, with its rent listed as £85,000 per year.

Another venue which has been empty for more than two years is The Rising Sun, which appears to still be on the market via Savills.
No planning applications have been submitted to turn the premises into something new since its closure in June 2023.

On the other side of the road, a unit stands vacant next to The Pearl Fish Restaurant, which was formerly Merkur Slots and previously William Hill.

The premises next to Bear with the Hair has been empty for a number of years after the closure of Hornchurch’s TUI branch, and still features a Mass & Co to let sign.
Not much further along, at 157 High Street, the shutter is still down on the former Cakes & Bakes shop, which is now marked as permanently closed on Google.
