The publication has released its list of the top 260 places to live next year, highlighting the most desirable neighbourhoods, towns and villages across the UK, with consideration for schools, shopping, pubs, green space and community feel.
Among London’s picks, Herne Hill stood out for its mix of leafy streets, independent shops and strong village atmosphere, all while being just minutes from Brixton and Dulwich.
The Zone 2 neighbourhood is known for its characterful, tree-lined roads, bustling cafés and boutiques, and its proximity to Brockwell Park.
The park is also home to Brockwell Lido, a Grade II-listed outdoor pool that has long been a favourite for swimmers and sunseekers in the summer months.
Locals can browse everything from bookstores to record shops or pick up gifts in one of the area’s many independents.
Popular cafés include Blackbird Bakery, known for its homemade pastries, and The Milkwood, which serves hearty breakfasts and speciality coffee.
The Sicilian Deli – also praised by The Telegraph – is a local favourite for cheeses, sauces and meats, with many stopping in for a pastry and coffee after a weekend walk.
Film fans may also recognise Herne Hill from the 2024 film We Live in Time, starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, which was shot extensively in the area.
The neighbourhood’s food scene continues to grow, with venues such as Archies offering Latin American dishes and cocktails, including a particularly punchy pisco sour.
Utter Waffle draws crowds for its indulgent chicken waffles and avocado smash – dishes that have even appeared on Saturday Kitchen.
The Florence is a much-loved local gastropub, especially popular for its Sunday roast.
Independent shopping is another draw, with stores like Brothers Green selling everything from vintage clothing to houseplants.
Residents also support local arts and heritage through community projects, including live music at Off the Cuff and conservation work around historic Brockwell House.
According to Rightmove, the average property price in Herne Hill over the past year was £762,765.
Flats made up most sales, fetching an average of £487,261.
