Office for National Statistics population data, published on July 30, shows that the average age of those living in Havering is 38.9 years old.
This is the youngest Havering’s population has been since 2011 and marks a gradual decline in average age over the past decade.
At its oldest in 2012, the median age in the borough was 41, compared with 39.1 years old in 2023.

When the data was recorded in mid-2024, there were 276,274 people living in Havering: of this, a total of 17,246 were 0-4 year olds.
This is up from 16,500 recorded as part of the 2021 census – the results of which also showed the demographic of Havering getting younger compared with the previous census data.
According to the latest data set, the most common age in the borough is 36, with 4,426 people reaching this age by mid-2024.

In comparison, 2,768 people in Havering are 90 or over.
Previously a borough with one of the oldest populations in London, these changing demographics mean that Havering now has an average age noticeably lower than other local authorities, such as Sutton, Richmond upon Thames and Bromley.
The Havering population still surpasses the average age of the capital at 35.7 years old – but is now younger than England as a whole, with a median age of 40.2 across the country.
