The Alzheimer’s Carers Information and Support Programme has been recognised for its work across Havering by Everyone Active’s Community Champions scheme.
Since its launch in 2022, the initiative has supported more than 150 carers in the borough, with around 50 people attending sessions each year.
It provides those looking after people living with dementia with guidance, peer support, and evidence-based information.
The aim is to help carers feel informed, less isolated, and more confident in accessing services.
The workshops, which are led by trained Alzheimer’s Society staff and volunteers, also equip carers with the necessary resources to secure financial benefits, plan for the future, and connect with others in a supportive environment.
Tiziana Groom, dementia support and partnerships services manager at the Alzheimer’s Society for North Central London, said: “The Everyone Active Community Champions scheme is about collaborative efforts with active partners and local organisations, successfully bringing dementia communities together, fostering connection, understanding, and resilience in Havering.
“This recognition highlights the dedication in delivering targeted health and wellbeing advice, for carers and for individuals living with dementia.
“This achievement reflects the power of community collaboration and our shared vision for a more inclusive and supportive environment for all those impacted by dementia.”
The Community Champions scheme, launched earlier this year, recognises local projects that positively impact the lives of residents.
It provides successful applicants with free access to facilities to support their work, alongside promotional support to enhance awareness and foster community connections.
Karen Heilbrunn, activity and wellbeing manager at Everyone Active, said: “We are incredibly proud to support the Alzheimer’s Carers Information and Support Programme as a Community Champion.
“The work they do in Havering is vital, giving carers access to the information, advice and support they need, while also reducing isolation.
“This is a perfect example of how leisure centres can play a role in supporting not just physical health, but wider wellbeing in the community.”
Since its establishment, the Alzheimer’s Carers Information and Support Programme has been committed to enhancing the knowledge, skills, and understanding of carers in their roles.
The workshops offer carers the chance to connect with other carers, sharing experiences and learning from one another.
Councillor Gillian Ford, deputy leader of Havering Council and cabinet member for adults and wellbeing, said: “Congratulations to The Alzheimer’s Carers Information and Support Programme in being recognised by Everyone Active’s Community Champions scheme.
“Caring for someone with dementia can feel a lonely and isolating place, schemes such as these, bring people with a shared understanding and experience together.
“The charity’s work in raising awareness of such an important issue provides significant support and guidance to families and individuals lives across Havering.”
