Harlow Council has reported that 99.9 per cent of retail units in its neighbourhood centres and smaller “hatches” are filled, crediting the high occupancy to ongoing investment through its Building Harlow’s Future plan.
The scheme aims to ensure that centres outside the town centre also benefit from improvements, with funding directed toward shopfront repairs, upgraded CCTV, improved paving and lighting, and refurbished car parks.
Cllr Dan Swords, leader of Harlow Council, said: “Neighbourhood centres and hatches are the beating heart of our communities – places where people shop, meet, and connect.
“Harlow had the first neighbourhood centre in the country, and we’re proud to continue that legacy.
“While many towns face boarded-up shops, 99.9 per cent of our neighbourhood shop units in the neighbourhood shopping centres and hatches are full.
“That is an amazing achievement which shows how we’re backing local businesses and growing the local economy.”
The council said that this high occupancy rate, combined with interest from established brands and new businesses, demonstrates the continued appeal of Harlow’s neighbourhood retail locations.
Work also supports the council’s goals of “renewing our neighbourhoods” and “securing our future.”
