Haringey raises Red Ensign to mark Merchant Navy Day

Haringey community members joined council representatives at George Meehan House to commemorate the day, with the Red Ensign being raised by deputy mayor Cllr Michelle Simmons-Safo.

Cllr Simmons-Safo was accompanied by council leader Cllr Peray Ahmet, the borough’s deputy lieutenant, Captain Peter Baker RNR, RD, ward councillors, and community leaders from the Haringey Multi-Faith Forum.

The day salutes UK’s merchant navy heroes (Image: Haringey Council) Merchant Navy Day is an annual observance that acknowledges the contributions of merchant seafarers past, present, and future.

A ceremony was held at George Meehan House (Image: Haringey Council) This year marks the tenth anniversary of The Seafarers’ Charity’s Fly the Red Ensign campaign, which strives to raise awareness about the contributions of merchant seafarers.
