The poll to elect a new councillor for St Ann’s ward in Tottenham will be held on Thursday, April 10, between 7am and 10pm.
It follows the resignation of Tammy Hymas, who represented the ward from 2022 until last month. Hymas voiced discontent with the government’s management of local authority funding, which she said had forced the council to make tough decisions.
In December, Haringey Council reduced the opening hours for its nine libraries in a bid to save money.
Ms Hymas had also made a deputation against the council’s implementing of a borough-wide public space protection order (PSPOs) in January, saying they would harm vulnerable people, particularly the homeless.
She had also been calling on the council to end all pension fund investments linked to the supply of weapons to Israel. Three former Labour councillors quit the party back in 2023, and formed the Independent Socialist Group, following Sir Keir Starmer’s response to the situation in Gaza at the time.
Ms Hymas has denied having any plans to quit the Labour Party, however, instead saying she was keeping her options open.
The deadline to register to vote to take part in the poll is today (March 25) at 11.59pm, while the deadline to sign up for postal voting is Wednesday March 26 at 5pm.
People who wish to vote by proxy must do so by Wednesday April 2 at 5pm. Voters will be required to have a photo ID when voting in person.
