National Geographic has just ranked the 20 travel adventures to book in 2026 with a focus on experiences that “engage all the senses”.
It says the kind of immersive adventures that stir something deeper and linger long after you leave a destination sits alongside a surge in nature-based, wellness and cultural experiences, and a shift toward ‘transformational travel’ that boosts personal growth.
According to the magazine and non-profit travel organisation, the hottest trends in this category include taking a sauna on a Hackney rooftop.
The activity is right up there with forest bathing in Japan and football pilgrimages in South America – with London’s urban saunas ranked in seventh place.
As every Londoner knows these often community run sweatboxes – accompanied by a freezing cold plunge bath or shower – have popped up all over the capital in recent years.
But National Geographic singled out Rooftop Saunas in Netil Corner “perched high above an east London office block with sweeping views of the skyline, offering a serene escape in the clouds”.

It also namechecked the Community Sauna Baths in Hackney Wick for offering “a more rustic charm, tucked away in a slightly ramshackle yard filled with potted plants”.
Punters at Rooftop Saunas can choose from 30, 60 or 90 minute sessions in a private sauna room for up to four people, with use of a private show, cold plunge pools and waterfall buckets.
After sweating it out in up to 85 degree temperatures, there’s also a private cool-down room featuring a mini-bar, complimentary tea and coffee and essential oils and skincare botanicals.
The venue, which has a sister site in Brixton, won best urban sauna at the Sauna Summit awards in 2024.
On its website, Rooftop Saunas say: “Enjoy sweeping views of the city from your private cabin, with outdoor contrast cold plunges in the garden to sharpen your reset.
“By creating unique spaces that enhance the sauna and cold plunge experience, we help individuals and communities find their calm in cities across the UK.”
One five-star reviewer wrote: “So relaxing, what an incredible experience!”
Another posted: “Great experience and incredible views over the whole of London.”
