While most hangovers eventually fade on their own, some can linger for a full day, or perhaps longer.
But now scientific research conducted by Britsuperstore has revealed the secret to avoiding a hangover – green tea.
How many cups of tea/coffee should you drink in a day?
How green tea prevents hangovers
Green tea contains “powerful” antioxidants called catechins which help accelerate the liver’s ability to metabolise alcohol, Britsuperstore owner Richard Price explained.
He added: “These antioxidants reduce the oxidative stress caused by alcohol, helping to minimise the harmful effects it can have on your body.
“While drinking green tea won’t guarantee a completely hangover-free morning, it can certainly support your body’s natural detox process and potentially reduce common hangover symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, and dehydration.
“Green tea also helps with hydration, a key element in post-drinking recovery.”
Mr Price said when you drink alcohol, your liver works overtime to break down and process toxins which can lead to an imbalance in your body’s systems.
This is what causes the dreaded hangover symptoms.

Green tea’s antioxidants can help:
- Reduce liver inflammation
- Improve liver function
- Boost your body’s ability to flush out toxins faster
The Britsuperstore owner added: “If you’re looking for a natural, soothing remedy to help get back on track, green tea might be one of the easiest ways to support your recovery.”
Food and drink to avoid to help prevent a hangover
Along with having a cup of green tea, Mr Price said there were also a few things to avoid consuming to help prevent a hangover. This included:
- Coffee – as it will dehydrate you even more, worsening your hangover the next day.
- Processed food with refined carbs and added sugar – these are consumed faster by the body and don’t have the shielding effects of other ingredients.
- Foods with high salt content – they can dehydrate you which will make you reach for more drinks (which will dehydrate you even further).
