The owners of Gordon Bennett, on 75 Maple Road, expect to assign the lease to owners, who they are confident will “inject fresh young energy into this wonderful community”.
Gordon Bennett opened in 1999, replacing The Royal Charter.
The owners said that over the past two decades, the bar and kitchen has been a strong part of the neighbourhood.
Gordon Bennett hosted countless celebrations and milestones for both staff and customers, such as first dates and engagements to christenings and local gatherings.
In a heartfelt statement put up on the door of the bar and kitchen, the owners thanked patrons for their support over the years.
They said: “It has been our true pleasure, and we are eternally thankful for the support you have shown us.
“Sometimes we got things wrong, and you made allowances for that too.
“Thank you.”
The team also highlighted their role in helping establish Surbiton’s legendary farmers’ market.
The owners invited customers to continue enjoying their signature hospitality at their sister pub, the Surbiton Flyer, as the lease for 75 Maple Road is prepared for new ownership.
The statement reads: “Our dear customers and community, I have taken the very difficult decision to close our lovely neighbourhood bar and kitchen for the last time.
“We expect to assign the lease to new owners very soon, who we are sure will inject fresh young energy into this wonderful community.
“The team, suppliers and I have enjoyed more than 20 years of brilliant moments.
“We have witnessed many special times in people’s lives, from catching love at first sight, to first dates, all the way to first dancers, and, of course, subsequent christenings.
“And that’s just the staff.
“We have shared all the life journeys you would expect for a local bar and more.
“It has been our true pleasure, and we are eternally thankful for the support you have shown us.
“Sometimes we got things wrong, and you made allowances for that too.
“Thank you.
“We hope to see you out there soon at our sister pub, the Surbiton Flyer, where you will always feel our signature warm hospitality.
“We are genuinely thankful for all the support we have received over the years.”
