The British Transport Police was alerted to an incident on the tracks at Gidea Park railway station at 11.20pm on December 30.
Officers were dispatched to the scene alongside paramedic colleagues from the London Ambulance Service.
A patient was located and was pronounced dead.
Enquiries are now underway to establish the circumstances leading up to the fatal incident.
A BTP spokesperson said: “Officers attended Gidea Park railway station following reports at 11.20pm on 30 December of a casualty on the tracks.
Paramedics also attended, and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.”
