From “The Big Screen” to Stream: The Decline of Cinemas

Why are less people going to the cinema?

COVID-19 has led to his shift and consumer preferences. People would rather spend their money on streaming services over a £7 ticket to the cinema. Many people reported saying that streaming, services such as Netflix and Disney+, provided unmatched “flexibility and affordability”.

Downsides to streaming services

Streaming services cause an overall decrease in the theatrical experiences and the communal aspect of films. The cinema was originally away to unite people from different backgrounds by telling compelling stories. However with the rise of streaming platforms, the convenience from watching at home becomes much more appealing. This has therefore led to a sense of solitude of people choosing to watch films at home alone.

What does this mean for the future?

Technology in modern society is ever changing and it is becoming difficult for cinemas to keep up. A decline in cinemas attendance could leads to the obsoletion of cinemas, affecting local communities that rely on the theatre for jobs and revenue.
