The incident happened in Sunderland Road near Perry Vale just after 5.20pm yesterday (March 5).
Officers attended and a man in his 30s was taken to hospital with injuries thought to be life-threatening.
The Met has since confirmed that he is no longer thought to be in a life-threatening condition.
There have been no arrests and enquiries continue.
Perry Vale, near the scene of the crime, remains closed westbound but is open eastbound according to the AA.
