Mr Singh – known to loved ones as Gary – suffered a fatal stab wound at his home address in Felbrigge Road on July 23.
An inquest into his death was formally opened at East London Coroner’s Court on Wednesday (July 30).
The court gave his age as 25, but the Metropolitan Police said he was 30.
“Police and London Ambulance Service attended the home address following a report of an altercation,” said coroner’s officer Jean Smyth.
“Gurmuk Singh was found bleeding heavily. Sadly, he could not be saved.”
A post-mortem examination has given his cause of death as “a stab wound to the left thigh”.
“This is an ongoing police investigation,” said Mrs Smyth.
As the death was clearly unnatural, coroner Nadia Persaud said it was her duty to open an inquest.
“The inquest will be opened and adjourned for further investigations to take place,” she said.
“I want to receive an update from the police in relation to their investigation and I’m going to ask the coroner’s officer to request that in four weeks.
“If charges are brought then I will adjourn the inquest.”
Mrs Persaud said she would not order disclosure of any records or evidence beyond the pathology and toxicology reports, as she must allow any criminal investigation to take precedence.
She provisionally listed the final inquest for March, but added: “That is very much dependent on the crown court proceedings.”
Two men and three women were arrested on July 23 on suspicion of murder.
Four have been released on bail. One – 27-year-old Amardeep Singh, of Felbrigge Road, Ilford – has been charged with murder.
Det Ch Insp Joanna Yorke said: “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family at this unimaginably difficult time.
“An incident of this nature sends shockwaves throughout the local area and we understand the direct impact on the community.
“People can expect to see an uptick in police presence while officers conduct initial investigations. Please do not hesitate to speak to them if you have any concerns at all.”
